Holiday Fraud is on the Rise- Here’s How to Stay Safe

The holiday season is a time for giving, celebration, and reflection. Unfortunately, it’s also a peak season for scams and financial fraud according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation via the 2024 Internet Crime Report. U.S. consumers lost over $16 billion to internet crime in 2024—a 33 % increase from 2023. To support you in protecting your finances and making the most of your holiday spending, we’ve put together a few practical tips below:

Plan Your Holiday Spending

Begin with a clear gift list and assign a spending limit for each person. This will help you avoid overspending and keep your finances on track. As you shop, compare prices across reputable retailers to make sure you are getting the best value. Avoid impulse purchases that are not part of your plan.

Track Your Purchases

Save your receipts and note your expenses. This allows you to monitor your total holiday spending and makes returns or disputes easier should they arise.

Use Credit and Debit Cards Wisely

Credit cards can be helpful tools when used responsibly. They provide fraud protection, purchase tracking, and often offer rewards. Try to pay your balance in full to avoid accruing unnecessary interest charges at the start of the new year. Debit cards also offer federal protections, especially for point-of-sale and ATM transactions. Review your statements regularly and report any discrepancies promptly.

Be Careful with Gift Cards

Gift cards are a popular and convenient gift, but not all are created equal. Federal law requires that most gift cards remain valid for at least five years from the date of activation. Be aware of any inactivity fees, and purchase cards only from reputable sources. Never use gift cards to pay unknown parties who request them via email or text.

Recognize Common Holiday Scams

Look out for fake shipping alerts, unsolicited requests for donations, and too-good-to-be-true offers. Fraudsters often pose as legitimate retailers or charities to gain access to your information. Avoid clicking on suspicious links or entering personal information on unfamiliar websites.
